Perfect

At 7 years old, she heard her mama cryin’

She crept down the hall staying clear of glass on the floor

Her daddy was gone he left in the night

She must have done something wrong

For him to leave her behind

     If she was beautiful

     If she was lovable

     He would have stayed

If she is perfect,  he will come home

Won’t ask for nothing, won’t cry when she’s hurt

She won’t be trouble or make a mistake

If she is perfect,  he will love her

At 19 years old, naïve and vulnerable

She trusted a man and gave her heart to him

The bruises have healed, but the scars, the scars remain

And now she’s confused, surely love was pain

     If she was beautiful

     If she was lovable

     He would have stayed

If she was perfect, he would have been kind

It’s her fault, he hurt her, she knows not to fight

She should have listened, she knows not to speak

If she was perfect, he would have loved her

A few years ago, he took her hand and promised never to let go

She pushed him away because fear is all she knows

He stood by her side unafraid of the walls she built

And proved them all wrong and showed her what love truly is

     And she is beautiful

     And she is lovable

     And here he stays

And he thinks she’s perfect in spite of it all

He sees the beauty in all of her flaws

He tells her softly you’re worth so much more

Can you see, you’re perfect,  just as you are

Just yesterday she looked in the mirror to see

That she is perfect, as only she is meant to be

     And she is beautiful

     And she is lovable

     And she is beautiful

     In her own way

She isn’t perfect, but she’ll be all right

She’s broken and lovely, She’s dark and she’s light

She’s scared, but she’s fearless, She fails, but she tries

She isn’t perfect, but she loves her
